Listening skills in business analysis

The business analyst use their effective listening skills to understand information that is communicated verbally.

Listening is the act of not just hearing words but understanding their meaning.

Business analysts use effective listening skills to correctly understand what is being said and show that they think that what the speaker is saying is important.

Active listening involves both listening and understanding what the other person is trying to say beyond the words used in order to understand the core of the message.

Active listening includes encapsulating and repeating what was said in different terms in order to confirm that both the listener and the speaker have the same understanding.

There are some measures of effective listening which include:

  1. Offering the speaker your focused attention, responding to the speaker with verbal or non-verbal encouragement.
  2. Providing comments to the person or the group that is speaking to ensure that they have the same understanding.
  3. Using active listening skills by delaying judgment and responding correctly.
