Solution knowledge is the use of knowledge of departments, environments, or technology to efficiently spot the most effective means of implementing a change.
When the business analysis work involves improving an existing solution, they have to apply knowledge and experience from the previous work on to this existing solution.
Knowledge of the range of commercially available solutions or suppliers can help with the identification of possible alternatives.
The business analyst may use knowledge gained from previous experiences to speed up the discovery of potential changes through elicitation or in-depth analysis.
There are some measures of effective solution knowledge which include:
- Shorten the time or cost to implement a required change.
- Reduced time on requirements analysis or solution design.
- Knowing when a larger change is not warranted based on the estimated business benefit.
- Understanding how additional functionalities that are present in the solution, but is not currently being used, can be used to provide value.
