A day in the life of a Business Analyst

Many aspiring Business Analysts would like to know what a typical day in the life of a Business Analyst is like, so here it goes.

I would go through what a typical my work day is like :

My day usually starts early at 8 a.m. but I like to get in to work a little early so I usually get in at 7:30 a.m.

  • 7.30 a.m. – 7.45 a.m. : Get in to work, put away my things and socialize with my co-workers while getting some breakfast.
  • 7.45 a.m. – 8. 00 a.m. : Have breakfast.
  • 8.00 a.m. – 8.15 a.m. : Go through my emails, reply to any outstanding emails and flag any emails that I would like to follow up on.
  • 8.15 a.m. – 8.30 a.m. : Log into the IT service management system and review my assigned application support tickets.
  • 8.30 a.m. – 9.00 a.m. : Attend the Daily stand up meeting with my team.
  • 9.00 a.m. – 10 a.m. : work on the application support tickets that have been assigned to me.
  • 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. : Work on Agile cards that have been assigned to me, create some new cards based on need and perform Business Analysis tasks such as root cause analysis, requirements gathering, requirements documentation and requirements validation and requirements verification.

Note : My team works on a 50-50 work split, this means half of my time is spent working on applications support tickets while the other half is spent working on Agile initiatives and projects.

  • 12 p.m. – 1 p.m. : Go for my Lunch break
  • 1 p.m. – 2 p.m. : Review my emails for responses from customers, emails from other team members and responses to my enquiries from application vendors.
  • 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. : Continue working on working on my Agile cards.
  • 3 p.m. – 4 p.m. : Log into the service management system and resolve any outstanding assigned support tickets.
  • 4 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. : Go home.

Note : In between all these activities, I might have some meetings and adhoc technical discussions with my team members and other IT personnel.

So this was a summary of what my typical workday looked like before COVID19.

From the middle of March, I have been working from home so my day has changed just a little.

Some of these changes include: no transit time, I resume at 8 a.m. now and have breakfast while going through my emails.

So while my day has stayed pretty much the same, now I can have my meetings in my pajamas !
